Fleet Technical Manager, Ocean Choice International

Ocean Choice International (Ocean Choice) is presently accepting applications for a Fleet Technical Manager as part of our Atlantic Fleet Operations Group located in the St. John’s Office.

Reporting to the Director of Fleet Operations, the Fleet Technical Manager will work side-by-side with the Operations Managers and the Fleet Technical advisor to perform their duties with a high degree of efficiency and accuracy. The main requirements and responsibilities for the Fleet Technical Manager will be, but are not limited to any combination of the following:

  • In conjunction with the Operations Managers, the Fleet Technical Manager will be responsible for the oversight and approval of the maintenance work during port days between fishing trips.
  • In conjunction with the Senior Engineer/Manager of Capital Projects, the Fleet Technical Manager will be responsible for the preparation and development of capital budgets for annual maintenance and scheduled refits for Ocean Choice’s Fleet.
  • Coordinate the use of Ocean Choice’s electrical and refrigeration support staff who report to the Senior Engineer/Manager of Capital Projects to each of the vessels/vessel managers.
  • Liaison with regulatory authorities as required.
  • Develop and implement effective maintenance strategies to minimize down time during turnarounds.
  • Work with the operations group to further implement and improve the preventative maintenance program.
  • Work with the operations group to develop effective landing plans and contractor supervision.
  • Maintain oversight of and familiarity with spares in storage at the warehouse and at remote sites.
  • Assist the purchasing department with technical information regarding spares orders.
  • Assist with the ongoing development of the International Safety Management (ISM) code as it pertains to the technical aspects.

The ideal candidate must demonstrate:

  • Sound understanding of Factory Freezer Trawler (FFT) operations.
  • Strong engineering knowledge of FFT systems, including; refrigeration, factory automation / factory equipment and processes, propulsion plant, electrical systems, fishing equipment systems (e.g. winches, etc.), safety equipment and hotel systems.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory inspections from TCMS and Class society.
  • Knowledge of safe working regulations as applied to marine operations, and using sub-contractors.
  • Ability to work with preventative maintenance programs.
  • Ability to prioritize, estimate and manage contractors, engineering staff and work schedules.
  • Willingness to step in and do hands on work where required.
  • Ability to travel as there could be assigned tasks outside Atlantic fleet as required.
  • Recognized certificate of training in the marine or mechanical field.
  • Proven experience in organizing and managing maintenance work.
  • Team Player and ability work in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills.
  • Strong computer proficiency including excel, word, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings and electrical schematics.
